Over the years, many people have contributed to the development of WordNet. The project began in the Princeton University Department of Psychology, and is currently housed in the Department of Computer Science.

George A. Miller, who began the WordNet project in the mid-1980s, passed away on July 22, 2012 at the age of 92.
WordNet has been supported by grants from the NSF, ARDA, DARPA, DTO, and REFLEX.
Work on WordNet is currently supported by the National Science Foundation under grants 0855157 and 0137139, and by a generous grant from the Tim Gill Foundation.
